Hi Dr Bland

Just an update for you. Following an MRI scan showing early stages of Arthritis in both wrists and a long conversation with Mr Smith, a trial release was done this morning on my left hand. I will let you know how I get on.

I'm relieved in a way that someone else finds it difficult to be sure of the origin of all your symptoms but I did think that at least a part of it was probably CTS so it will be interesting to see how much effect the surgery has. Please do let me know how the symptoms change over the next week or so. JB

I forgot to mention that Nick said the wrist was very tight and the nerve was squashed. I'm not quite sure what a tight wrist means or is caused by. I will keep you posted as time goes on. Thank you for your continued interest and support.

All surgeons always say that about every carpal tunnel wrist :-) JB

Not sure what's happening. Since yesterday I have severe pain in my wrist. The slightest movement and it is agony. I haven't been able to sleep as it is too painful to even have my hand/wrist resting on a pillow. I am taking co-codomal 4 times a day, but it isn't helping with the pain. Any advice?

So that's only 5 days post-op. That is not a usual time to have severe pain so it should probably be checked out by the surgeons - ie Nick and Mr Smith. We can try to get a message to them tomorrow but it wouldn't hurt for you to try and contact them directly too. JB

Spoken to Mr Smith's secretary. Got an appointment with Nick Tuesday morning. Been advised to go to A&E today.

That sounds like a good plan overall, though I often wonder what A&E think when faced with post-operative complications. I would be curious to know what they say. JB

I went to A&E, the doctor was at first going to send me away with stronger painkillers. However, he did in the end (after a little persuasion) contact Orthopedics and Mr Smith sent a member of his team down. They did blood test and ruled out any infection, prescribed Diclofenac, Ice, Elevation and rest. Seeing Nick on Tuesday as a follow up.

Although I am not completely pain free, it is a lot better than it was. There doesn't seem to be much swelling, if any. The wrist still gives me some discomfort when moving it.

It sounds like an unusually florid inflammatory reaction to surgery. Have you ever had any other surgical procedures in the past and had problems? JB

Not to my knowledge.
I saw Nick today, he said it's Pillar Pain. Apparently I'm just unlucky. Have to keep an eye on it, I've got an appointment to go back in 8 weeks to Mr Smiths Clinic to be re-assessed.

I'm glad they are keeping an eye on it. Let me know whether it settles please. JB

HI JB.

Still having quite a lot of pain in the wrist. I think the scar is healing ok, there is a lot of dead skin around it and it's sore. I have been using E45 3-4 times a day for the past 5 days or so (just after the stitches fell out) and there seems to be no improvement. It does itch a lot.

I don't know if you can see much from this, I took this photo this morning.

Just from the photograph it looks to be healing OK to me - though I'm not a surgeon of course. Pain in the wrist is not uncommon at this point. As long as the CTS symptoms have shown a definite improvement I wouldn't worry about it too much. JB
