Six week review

I had a steroid injection on 21.08.17. In the first week, my fingers were quite numb I had pain in my wrist. It is now six weeks since my injection I only have numbness in the tips of my thumb, middle and third fingers which does not give me too much of a problem.

It sounds as though that has worked fairly well. Is that sufficient relief of the problem to now wait and see what happens? JB

Yes I think so for now thank you. I will contact you again if the symptoms get any worse. Thank you for your help.

I had a steroid injection in August 2017 which has been really good, but unfortunately my symptoms have now returned. I now have pain under my wrist, numbness in my thumb, index finger and the tips of my other fingers. Is it possible that another injection could help?

as it's been a year since we saw you I'll arrange another appointment. It's certainly possible that it might be suitable for a second injection but I do want to look at how bad it is first. I've put you into a space created by a cancellation next Tuesday (23rd Oct) at 9:30 am. We'll send out an appointment letter but it may not reach you in time. If you can't make that let me know - but the next available space after that is probably in November sometime. JB

I have just completed a new diagnostic questionnaire as requested in the appointment letter.

Thanks very much - hopefully it was only the severity section - not the whole lot. JB

I had my operation three weeks ago and I was wondering if it is normal to still have numbness in my thumb and a numbness sensation in my hand? When can I expect to experience some improvement?

Grade 5 can be slow to improve after surgery. It should be showing progress by three months post-op, at which point we will test it again if it's not clearly improving. If you add another severity score to the website now that helps me assess the situation a bit too. JB

Thank you. I have completed a new questionnaire, but it may not reflect what is actually happening as a lot of my pain relates to the effects of the operation. I have no feeling in my thumb now which seems to be worse than before the operation. I am probably being impatient as I had expected an improvement within four weeks, but did not realise that it can take three months!

Thanks. If that's not showing some progress at 6 weeks post-op I might take a quick look at it again - a bit earlier than I would otherwise. Keep me posted. JB

Thank you. Hopefully it will have improved by then, but I will keep you posted.

I am sorry that my reply is a bit later than promised because of the festive period. It is now eight weeks post operation and I am still finding that my thumb and third finger on my right hand are still feeling numb, but all the tingling has now gone. I am experiencing some painful sensations inside the scar at times and still finding some normal household chores problematic.

Is this normal for this period of time?

Many thanks.

It's certainly within the range of what can be seen after correctly performed surgery but to check I will schedule a re-test for about three months post-op and we'll see how it's doing. JB
