Tingles In Middle And Index Finger Only

Hi,
Woke up 4 weeks ago with a tingling sensation and some numbness in just my middle and index finger. It’s on the palm side only and on one side of the fingers. I have no other pain or tingles anywhere so cannot tell what’s causing this. Any ideas? I’m a metal worker so my hands do get a lot of use. I also got really cold hands a few weeks ago a couple of weekends in a row. Not sure that would have anything to do with.
I’ve done some simple tests and nothing really makes the symptoms worse. Also in the beginning and had some bad neck/back pains which I thought were muscle knots.
Any ideas would be most welcome
Thanks
Lewis

Judging by the symptom questionnaire it's not very likely to be CTS but it's not wholly impossible. You can get similar symptoms from neck problems and some circulatory disturbances. Are you an East Kent resident or from elsewhere? JB

Hi Jeremy,
Thanks for your reply yes I’m an East Kent resident. My feeling is it is caused by the neck pains I’ve had and having. Would this be something we can check to find out why? :-)
Thanks

Unfortunately my kind of testing is almost entirely useless at showing neck problems. Generally it's best to investigate the neck with MRI scanning, though it can be hard to interpret the results because almost everyone's neck shows degenerative changes. If there are significant neck pains/stiffness and peripheral neurological symptoms of numbness/weakness it usually calls for a neurology referral. JB

Ok thanks for the info :-)
Is that something you can refer me for as I’m an east Kent patient and was told to come to you by my GP
Thanks Lewis

It's better if a referral comes from general practice as the admin systems and performance targets are all set up for monitoring that pathway. You can point them to this discussion thread as it's public and they should be able to get on with it. JB

Update:
Hi JB
I have a small update so the finger tingling has been getting better and nearly gone plus no more neck pain. For that reason I never went back to the GP thinking something in my neck had sorted itself sweet as.
Yesterday I did some planks as part of an exercise routine and as I did them I thought I felt something in my wrist/palm and now today my fingers seam to be tingling more than they were. Also this happening has reminded me that when it first came on about 6 weeks ago now I was doing more of those kinds of moves so maybe it’s linked.
I also today seam to have a slightly hot feeling hand to go with it.
Just wondering what your thoughts are now with this update?
Thanks
Lewis

My initial thought is the same fairly obvious one you have had yourself. If that sort of exercise seems to precipitate symptoms then it's probably best avoided :-) I think that's an exercise which will place some strain on most of the body, including the spine, so the development of symptoms at the wrist/hand doesn't necessarily mean tht's where the problem is unfortunately.
