You do have slightly odd symptoms and only mild nerve conduction abnormalites so we are relying mostly on the good but brief reaction to injection as an indicator that this is worth surgery. I hope it turns out OK. Let us know when you get a date from the waiting list office. JB

Ok Dr Bland i will i hope the goes well for me too as you said the left hand came up with carpal tunnel and i think the symptons for my right could be coming from neck but will know after the op! When i have the op do they do both hands or on

Hand a time
?

Only one at a time and I would be inclined to try the left first if it was me. JB

Different surgeons have different policies for post-operative care after carpal tunnel surgery, ranging from modest dressings which are removed quite quickly all the way up to plaster casting for a fortnight. Personally I am not a fan of serious immobilisation after surgery but you will need to discuss with the surgeons. If you end up on Michael Nicholas's list he can warn you in advance of what to expect on here but it may be hard to tell whose operating list you get placed on I'm afraid. JB

Thankyou - a users's account of day surgery at the hospital on here would be quite useful if you have time afterwards. We get a lot of feedback about the GP surgery arrangements but we don't hear as much about the hospital operations, and of course I am always interested in the outcomes. JB

I believe they use an absorbable suture so there is no need for a visit anywhere for stitch removal and I think they aim to check how you are doing in some way about 6 weeks after surgery but I could be wrong. JB

Hi, you are booked onto my (Michael Nicholas) carpal tunnel list. I am part of Mr Smith's hand surgery team and I carry out almost all of his carpal tunnel procedures for him. Dr Bland is correct, we will use a disolvable suture and see you in the clinic about six weeks after the operation. Mr Smiths post operative treatment is; Keep the operated hand elevated for 24 - 48 hours (you will be given a sling to help with this). Take analgesia if required. Keep the crepe bandage on for about 5 - 7 days and keep the skin dressing on for two weeks. Keep the whole lot clean and dry for two weeks and once the sutures fall out, usually after 2 - 3 weeks, start to massage the scar area with non-scented hand cream. You will be give all of this information on the day. Look forward to seeing you

As long as you don't mind travelling with one arm in a sling it shouldn't be a big problem. JB

It sounds as though the injection did predict the response to surgery then. The same is probably true of the right side even though that was electrically normal when tested. Let's see if the Smith team decide to proceed with the second hand. JB
