carpal tunnel syndrome and hormones
Hi, great information on this site, glad to have found it.
I am booked in for release surgery in my right hand in about 1 month, in a private hospital, courtesy of the NHS. I had almost exactly a year free of discomfort following a hydrocortisone jab, but it has come back with a vengeance!
Update
Just an update my left hand is improving daily since my op on 23rd June. It is a lot stronger although the scar is still a bit tender. I am having the right hand done on the 12th Sept. I played tennis last night and was wincing on most forehand shots. It is now the close season and all being well it will recover in time for my holiday in December in the sun. The weakness in my right hand is much worse than my left was pre- op . I just hope all goes well as tennis is a big part of my life.
Re: Causes of failed CT surgery
Talk about blame the victim. How can physicians point to alcohol use as an indicator of failed Carpal Tunnel Release surgery? Isn't this something that should be discussed and possibly contraindicate CTR surgery? A poor workman blames his tools. It is about accountability. If this is in fact true, social and moderate drinkers should be excluded as viable surgical candidates. In my opinion of course.
Back to work
I had open release surgery on my hand two weeks ago and everything is healing nicely, apart from the peeling skin on my scar but my surgeon has said I should go back to work because it would help my fingers. Unfortunately I work with money, and use a hand held computer (in my operated on hand) and I am having trouble gripping the money and picking it up. There is also a lot of numbness after I have used my hand a lot. Should I phone my doc and ask for more time off or go into work?
I'm so confused!
My name is Heather. I am in agony right now typing but i need to know what's wrong.
I went to the emergency room a week ago for right hand pain. Dr said carpal tunnel.
Next few days i noticed numbness while driving in my left hand. Then I was just laying in bed and it turned into an ice cold but hot burning pain and it came in waves, went to the ER again. They did xrays and said it was cervical radiculopathy.
CTS SURGERY FOR 92-YEAR OLD WOMAN
My 92-year old mother was just diagnosed with CTS in the right hand. Her neurologist told her that the EMG results indicate advanced CTS and that surgery would be necessary.
Please provide any commentary on CTS surgical patients of advanced age receiving this surgery. I am obviously concerned about her resilience and post-op complications.
Thanks.
Should I request re-referral to consultant?
I have had symptoms intermittently for 13 years, but consistently since the birth of my fourth child in 2006. I was referred to a consultant during this pregnancy and had 3 sets of steroid injections. These helped minimally only. As I was pregnant and needed to be able to change nappies etc after the baby was born I elected to defer any decision re surgery until the child was older. I then had a fifth child in April 2008.
Rescheduling of operation
Further to my email of 11th August, I am now able to log into the forum. Due to unforseen circumstances, I need to postpone the operation scheduled for the 8th September. I have a pre-op visit to beltinge and Reculver surgery on the 25th August, which I will still be able to keep, however, can the operation be postponed until after 1st November?
As perviuosly advised, I am away until Thursday 16th August. I look forward to your reply in due course.

6 weeks post op
Its now 6 weeks since the op. It is hard to clench my fist tightly.I don't know how hard I should push exercising the hand. I don't know if I can cause damage by overdoing it. I am using a soft ball to squeeze.
post op
Had an EMG that showed severe bilateral CT lesions worse on the right, although I was mostly asymptomic. The doctor who did the study could not believe the height of my pain threshold.
So I had my op 3 days ago to my right hand.
Changed my dressing and removed my bandage, as advised after 48 hrs.
But have found I'm still experiencing pain particularly just below where my wrist joins my palm and I find the need to put my arm into my sling to get relief. Have to say I admire others who have not taken any pain relief.
