Medication as a possible cure

I put this under a new topic since I have been to see a new (orthopaedic) doctor on the small island of Koh Samui, Thailand where I am living. Without telling him about my previous diagnosis or treatment (see thread Injection into palm of hand, below) he also diagnosed Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and he has prescribed the following medication:-

(TGABAPEN) Gabapentin 300 mg (15) 1 tablet before bedtime
(TETORI1) ECTORICOXIB 60 mg (15) 1 tablet before breakfast
(TOMERPRAZ) Omerprazole 20 mg (15) 1 tablet before breakfast

Cortisone injection into the palm of the hand

I was diagnosed with CTS in England but was not able to get treatment before arriving in Thailand to work. The pain was more severe here than back in the UK - perhaps due to the heat. Anyway I went to a local doctor and he gave me Cortisone Injection BUT into the palm of the hand. Has anyone else had the injection in this place? All the information on-line shows the investion into the wrist area. Thanks you for sharing any experiences.

A non-scalpel technique for carpal tunnel release: percutaneously looped thread transection of transvers carpal ligament

Dear Dr. J Bland: I am Jospeh Guo, an inventor and engineering specialist. I am impressed by your website. I would like to introduce my recent published article; A Non-scalpel Technique for Minimally Invasive Surgery: Percutaneously Looped Thread Transection of Transverse Carpal Ligament, accepted by HAND and available in open access: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11552-014-9656-4 The thread technique is not only for carpal tunnel release, but also for trigger finger release surgery, Achilles tendon extension surgery, decompression of inter-metatarsal nerve and plantar fascia release surgery.

Prognosis?

I am not sure whether it is possible to answer this question( but anyway!) I have been diagnosed as having CTS and had a couple of very painful episodes in February. After seeing the GP I saw a specialist who suggested surgery. Since when I have had annoying symptoms rather than pain during the day and have tried to always wear a splint at night which helps a lot. Not sure if I should wait to see what happens or proceed with surgery.

Elbow and shoulder pain

I have completed the questionnaire, but I am sorry, I don't understand the result! Maybe I am having a blond moment! Anyway, I would like to ask if CT can cause pain to the elbow and shoulder of the affected side? I wear a splint constantly at the moment, and although it helps relieve some of the pain in my thumb and hand, it has no effect on my elbow or shoulder. Both joints feel as though they need to 'click' back into place. Does this make any sense to anyone?

Post Surgery - Should I Work Through the Pain?

I had my op done on my right hand just under 2 weeks ago and having the stitches out tomorrow.

I am trying to get back to normal as getting frustrated not being able to do much.

My question as above - I get a knawing, grating pain in my wrist rather than anywhere near where the surgery took place - when I get this pain, should I ease off what I am doing or should I continue and ride it as it is all part of strengthening the wrist?

Hope you can advise.

Thanks

UK multicentre RCT of steroid injection v surgery in moderate CTS

Dear Dr Bland,

I am an Orthopaedic Hand Surgeon in Gloucester and for the last year have been developing an RCT of steroid injection versus surgery for moderate CTS. I agree with the Cochrane review that this has not been studied well enough and that we have not conclusively answered this. NICE guidelines do not specify what non-operative management should consist of for moderate CTS and CCG's policies for referral vary widely across the country, most probably due to the lack of evidence here.

Pins and needles

I have been waking up every morning for at least the past two weeks with pins and needles and numbness in my right hand. This has happened on and off over a long period of time but has been more persistent over the past fortnight. Ocassionally I have numbness in both hands. Symptoms are worse when I wake in the morning but can happen whilst driving , carrying shopping bags and in the middle of the night. This is not causing me pain as such ,do you think I should consult my GP or just wait to see if it improves again?

Dont know if to go ahead?

I have had carpal tunnel symptoms for a few years. I work with horses and i am physical every day. It just seemed to flare up from no where. I started getting pain in my right shoulder/ arm when using it and then my arm and hand would go dead at night and also tingles in my hand when driving or holding my hand up. I had nerve studies which showed ct on my right side and mild on left. I am booked in to have surgery on my right side a week today. I have read so many mixed opinions and results.

Cyst on flexor tendon in wrist, moderate carpal tunnel, is surgery worth it?

I need some assistance and advice.

I started experienceing carpal tunnel symptoms after my first child was born over two years ago. The symptoms progressed over a year and resulted in triggering of my hand upon straightening it, numbness in certain wrist positions, and hand pain. A cyst soon was visible on the underside of my wrist attached to one of the flexor tendons.
